Valentino Spring 2013 Couture, So Magical!

I really can not get the Valentino spring 2013 couture out of my mind...I know, I know that's so old news (according to fashion time), but it dwells on my mind. I should be talking about the Fall 2013 ready-to-wear shows (oh my gawd, Fendi gave me all sorts of life!), and I will, like I always do.
But back to Valentino, the designers couldn't have described it better: MAGICAL.

And when I saw their moodboard, I fell for the collection even harder, such incredible interpretation.

"where nature meets architecture and science meets spiritual rebirth" - Piccioli

To think so much hard work and pain (and sweat I imagine) produced something so pure, so delicate, so graceful...beautiful.
And it got me dreaming, of a future (soon I hope) when our Nigerian designers (who are doing great as it is) would look beyond the "obvious", and find inspiration from things so abstract it makes the mind wonder, and leaves you in awe when you do get it.

Now who wants to join me in my dreams wearing some couture?! haha!

Spring 2013: Alert! Alert!!

It's been a while as usual, but pardon my silence. I've been busy with work, yep work. Something that has to do with fashion (what else), advising and retail...oh and mobile. Hopefully I'll give more details soon...*fingers crossed*
Fashion weeks ended some days ago, and thanks to Style.com and internet (how did we ever cope without both before), the runway of our beloved designers were opened to us all. Like I always try to do (I do try), I made a few notes of some trends. Some of which are new, while others have been trending for a while:

MONOCHROME
Louis Vuitton, Stella McCartney, Diane Von Furstenberg, Balmain
MIDRIFF BARING
Miu Miu, Versace, John Galliano, Vivienne Westwood
The midriff-baring trended last spring, it's good to see it's still hanging around, and even more...as the belly button is no longer hidden. More is better, no?

STRIPES, STRIPES...MORE STRIPES
Marc Jacobs, Dolce & Gabbana, Dior, Oscar de la Renta
All manner of stripes were on the runway: fat, skinny, curvy, straight...Oh Marc Jacobs made a paradise of it.

PRETTY RUFFLES
Gucci, Balenciaga, Prabal Gurung, Givenchy
It's definitely the season for ruffles. I'm not sure I'm the ruffles-indulging type, but Balenciaga made it pretty cool though.

And finally:
WHITE AND PURE
Alexander Wang, Valentino, Blumarine, Jil Sander
This has been going on for some seasons now. I did a thesis on this a long while back, about how the environment and its people are yearning more and more for purity and clarity and cleanness...and not just in fashion. All-white is here to stay for some longy-long time.

Now my bed calls. Have a lovely week people.

Fall 2012- Chain Reaction

I have no idea what exactly this post title, that is "chain reaction", means but I think it sounds right and appropriate. Like some of you guys who follow my Facebook page know, I paid a little attention to the fashion weeks for fall 2012 that ended earlier this month. While I shared some of the looks that interested me on Facebook, I never got to share my tiny little observations. So here they are now.
On the runway of our beloved designers, a few styles, silhouettes, colors, inspirations, blah and blah connected hence forming what can be said to be trends:

Lanvin; Jason Wu; Proenza Schouler.
There was a substantial dosage of Brocade in many collections.

Gucci; Prada; Jean Paul Gaultier.
The dark side was visited by many designers, with Gothic looks.

Mary Katrantzou; Comme des Garcons; Stella McCartney.
Blue is definitely the color of this season, but not just any blue, it's the Klein blue. Note, not electric but Klein blue...I was quickly corrected by my professor when I called it electric (haha).

Proenza Schouler; Jason Wu; Damir Doma.
Many designers headed to the East for inspiration. A lot of looks could be said to be Asian...almost as if these designers were buttering up the Asians. Smart, you say, as they are the ones with the mostest...

And lastly

Alexander McQueen; Mary Katrantzou; Balenciaga.
There was this spacey, futuristic, hi-tech, sci-fi, I-dont-have-a-word-for-it thing going on. Designers definitely looked into the future, but presented it this time without the coldness and starkness usually associated with it.
Oh well, this is what I think so far. I hope to have more thoughts to share with you guys later.

Inspiration for Spring Summer!

I have refused to leave my apartment for some days now. It has been a shuffle between my bed, bathroom and kitchen for me, and the only chic thing I've worn are my comfortable pyjamas. But today I took a peek outside, and I saw the most beautiful thing I've seen in a while: a bright shiny sun and a blue sky (pff, sounds poetic). Oh I think spring is nigh.
I'm so looking forward to spring. While layering can be fun, I'm tired of the weight of coats and heavy jackets, I just want to wear a dress and a pair of ballerinas...more or less. Anyways this made me collect together all the looks I liked on the runway as my inspiration for spring.

Pictures from Style.com
I'm so loving the white-craze going around, but I'm thinking a touch of denim to shake up the feel of purity a little (like the Phillip Lim look). I'm looking forward to wearing my lace clothes toughened up with utility pieces. I also hope to bare my midriff a couple of times like I said I would here. And of course prints, prints and more prints!
I will try my best to keep you guys updated...*fingers crossed*

Milan Fashion Week: S/S '12

These past few days have been tedious. I had a lot of school work, not that I'm complaining...but I'm glad the pressure is down for now. One of my assignments was to analyse a fashion week for spring/summer 2012 and I was happy when my group got Milan fashion week, Milan has got a lot of beautiful designers. Though it was a group thing, I still did a complete individual analysis, and I thought I'd share with you guys.
Over fifty designers showed during the week, and while some (like DSquared2) totally stuck to their aesthetics and brand signature, some were totally overwhelmed by trends. However, some designers were able to find a good balance between the two. Alberta Ferretti, Dolce&Gabbana, and Versace are good examples:

Emporio Armani, Prada and Gucci definitely provided a proper fashion statement this season. Emporio Armani showed the uniformity associated with the future in a white and black collection; Prada brought back  to women fashion the sweetness that has been avoided for a while; and Gucci showed a strong and jazzy collection that brings to mind the 20s...the Gucci flapper dresses are definitely to-die-for.

If I had to pick a designer going down it would be Albino, simply because his collection looked confused, some fabrics looked cheap, and some styles looked unflattering...not to mention a couple of dresses reminded me of Lanvin. A big decline compared to his last collection I must say.
I noticed, spreading on the runway of designers were bold white as complete looks; pastel colours in pink, blue, yellow etc; baring of midriffs (which I think is hawt, and can't wait to try); un-held back embellishment (I love the D&G dress); and graphical with a shot of tribal prints. There was also 'crochety' and guipure lace, pleats and tassels.

What was new to me at Milan fashion week, however, was the underpinning showing below the hem of some garments, as seen on  the runway of (from left) Marni, Albino and Etro. I think it's interesting, but fingers crossed.

Some new designers also showed, and these three caught my eye. I guess I would watch out for them as the years go.
Fashion evolves all the time and at every point in time, certain designers create a few looks which contribute to the evolution of fashion. For the Milan spring summer '12, it would be these looks from Prada, Emporio Armani and Gucci. These looks summed up the contribution of Milan to fashion evolution. From pastel sweetness to futuristic white uniformity and then to edgy jazziness.

At the end of my studies and after staring at all these beautiful clothes, I wish I have a couple...okay, more than a couple, all of them wont be too much. But wishes are certainly not horses...*sigh*

Part IV: AMFW Runway- Light Camera Action!

The guys were not left out of the Arise fashion week as a few menswear designers showed their collections. I was fortunate to see two of the coolest collections: B-Side by Wale Adeyemi and Angelo Von Mol, who won Menswear Designer Of The Year, and they got me wishing I was a brother.
(Please note that all pictures on this blog are taken by me...xx)
